Creative Recycling
Recently online, I've seen a lot of people making "book clutches" or "book bags" which are recycled books which have been hollowed out to create a purse disguised as a book. I liked these because I love the idea of something being more than it appears and its a clever way of using an old used book into a little fashion accessory. However, a lot of the ones I've seen online are really expensive so I thought I'd make one for myself!
I used my copy of "Hush Hush" by Becca Fitzpatrick which was a bit battered when I bought it to begin with and since I had already read it and didn't see myself wanting to read it again, it was perfect for recycling.
I cut out the centre of the pages so that the book would have a hollow big enough to fit your phone or iPod, lipstick, blusher etc just like the things you would put inside a real clutch bag/purse.
Once I had hollowed out the book, I superglued the pages from the side and glued the first and back pages to the hard cover - this means that the book will only open at the hollow and it'll be strong.
All I need to do now to complete my clutch is to superglue a fastener button (like those you find on purses) to stop the book from falling open and I'll have a sneaky secret purse disguised as a book. (Since I live in constant fear of being mugged, maybe this will deter thieves since it'll look like I'm just carrying a boring old book and not that I'm actually carrying valuables.) Its pretty messy and I didn't get the best result because its not a very thick hardback and it would have worked better with a bigger book but I'm pretty happy with my first attempt.
