Sorry I haven't posted in a while. Since the 2014 Commonwealth Games are coming to Glasgow this summer, my class was set an assignment to write a piece about a commonwealth sport so here's my effort. Not 100% polished just yet but pretty much done.
Aquanaut
Climb up, breath, dive, entry, swim, climb out and repeat.
Pitch perfect precision on the end of the board,
I need to show symmetry and strength.
A taught steel string sprung into the air.
For a moment, I freeze and hover ten metres high,
I expand my wingspan with the elegance of eagle,
before plunging down to my prey.
I rapidly fold my body into a tuck and begin to spin.
I blink for a millisecond too long and lose direction,
Now I am flailing like a dying fish and falling
without control. I slam into the water on my stomach,
the soft turquoise water adopts the consistency of concrete.
My whole body instantly bruises purple as I drift
underneath the heavy, pressurised water.
Everything slows down and grows quiet.
All I hear is my own stunted breathing and
the sound from inside seashells.
I am weightless, merely a feather.
I close my puffy, black eyes and sink to the bottom.
The scent of hot chlorine floods through my nose,
I eventually open my bubbly eyes to see the depth of
the blurry blue pool. I soak my wounds in the warm
liquid before allowing the water to lift me up
towards the bright lights, to the surface to try again.
All compressed into a few seconds.
